There’s something incredibly special about a baby’s first birthday. It marks a year full of growth, milestones, and so many beautiful memories. One of my favorite ways to celebrate this season is with a smash cake session—fun, a little messy, and completely unforgettable.

What is a Smash Cake Session?

A smash cake session is exactly what it sounds like—your little one gets their very own cake to explore, smash, taste, and enjoy. It’s less about perfect poses and more about capturing personality. From curious little pokes to full-on frosting-covered giggles, every moment is genuine and full of joy.

As a photographer, these sessions are some of the most rewarding. Babies come in with their own unique personalities, and you truly never know what to expect. Some dive right in, others are a little more cautious, and a few just want to sit and observe. And honestly—that’s the beauty of it.

There’s no pressure for your baby to “perform.” The magic happens naturally.

• Bring a familiar snack or favorite toy for comfort

• Don’t worry if your baby hasn’t had cake before—curiosity is part of the fun

• Dress them in something simple (or bring an outfit change!)

• Be prepared to laugh… a lot

And yes—mess is expected and welcomed!
